Sunday Morning Smoothie

7 Apr

morning.smoothie

A fresh smoothie is a great way to get the day started instead of eating something heavy or greasy. This is a super simple smoothie that you can make on the weekend when you wake up, after a workout or even in a rush right before you leave for your work day. All you need to do is:

Blend together in a blender or food processer:

1 cup frozen or fresh mixed berries

1 cup coconut water

a few scoops of greek yogurt

1 banana

Optional: Add 1 tablespoon of manuka honey for extra sweetening

Pour into your cup of choice and enjoy!

Kale chips

Kale is an excellent source of antioxidants, fibre and vitamin K! Here is a great recipe for some yummy Kale Chips, an alternative to unhealthy potato chips. Another great way of getting your serving of kale is by blending it into a green morning smoothie.

coconut.waterI have been hearing a lot about coconut water and how it is good for you for a long time now. It was not until this winter that I decided to try some. At first I just purchased whatever I saw on the shelf and assumed it was healthy because it was labelled “Coconut Water”, while the version of coconut water I was buying at first was very tasty it wasn’t as healthy as I though it was. If you want true coconut water with all of the nutrients you MUST look at the ingredients when buying coconut water and make sure it says 100% coconut water.

Coconut water is super hydrating and can be a great drink after a workout because it has so many electrolytes, a great alternative to a sugar packed Gatorade or Powerade. Coconut water is filled with many vitamins and nutrients and very high in Potassium. Coconut water can be found in the grocery store in the juice isle. I like to buy mine in the large 1 Litre size instead of individual cans or bottles, they can add up!

How to use:

  • Can be consumed alone with some ice cubes to cool it down
  • Mixed into a smoothie instead of orange juice or any other juice if you do not like the taste of coconut water
  • Pour into an ice tray and let it freeze overnight, suck on the coconut ice cubes on a hot summer day

Beets, Beets, Beets!

Beets?

Yes beets, my new obsession. Beets have always been one of those foods that I was afraid to try. Recently I ordered an arugula salad at restaurant that had beets in it, and I thought it was delicious! I have since then been recreating my own version of the salad and doing a little bit of research on how beets are good for you.

Here’s what I found:

Beets are a natural cleanser for the body and really good for getting rid of toxins.

They are high in folic acid this is something our body needs to keep producing healthy new cells.

Great source of dietary fibre, fibre is a big component of digestion and helps to keep things flowing through your system.

High in magnesium which is needed by the body for proper muscle and nerve functioning and helps maintain a healthy immune system to fight disease!

My beet salad recipe:

Baby arugula or mixed greens, dark greens are better, the dark colour means more nutrients like iron, women need lots of iron!

Toasted pecans

Sliced pickled beets from a jar

Sliced avocado – great source of vitamin B for healthy hair

Sprinkled bits of goat cheese on top
