Must Read Article – Beware of Sugar Filled Drinks

Innocent smoothie has as much sugar as 3.5 Krispy Kreme donuts

This article from the Daily Mail UK is a must read! I knew that juice and packaged smoothies contained a lot of sugar so I usually stay away from them, but I did not know it was this bad! Stick with drinking water and tea to be safe and avoid extra sugar in your diet.

How to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

Staying healthy and fit during the holiday season can be difficult, but the trick is to go into the holidays forgetting that mindset, instead convince yourself that it is NOT difficult. It’s easy to make an excuse for ourselves and say “oh the holidays are coming, I should just give up now”. It’s true the holidays are coming, but we do not have to eat cookies, pie and heavy meals every day.

Start your NewYears resolution NOW, don’t wait until NewYears day when you’ve packed on 3 pounds of holiday weight and are hung over. You can wait until after New Years to start your heavy training but don’t make it harder for yourself by going crazy on junk food now.

With American Thanksgiving and Christmas quickly approaching start thinking about how your going to manage the holiday season now.

1. Keep up with your workout routine, if that means getting up extra early because you don’t have time after work do it! Staying active and making the time to stay active will influence you to eat healthy too.

2. Allow yourself to have treats. The holiday season is about enjoying yourself and involves some indulging but it does not have to be a complete write off. It’s okay to have one gingerbread cookie, or one slice of pie. If you eat healthy all day long and go to an event that night, let yourself indulge.

3. Don’t Stress. When your a guest or at a family members house you don’t always have control over what is being served. Be polite and still eat what they are serving, but when you have control over your meal make sure its healthy and nutritious! Try packing a lunch for work instead of going out to eat, eat fresh foods, raw veggies for snacking. You save money this way too.

4. Reduce Alcohol Intake. Drinking anything packs on empty calories that could have been spent on a delicious dessert. Try to stick to 1-2 drinks or nothing at all! Drinking too much will not only pack on the calories but will prevent you from wanting to get up early the next morning to workout.

What do you do to stay healthy during the holidays? Post a comment below with your ideas.

Happy Tummy Healthy Body (Cocoa-Peanut Smoothie Blast)

Happy Tummy Healthy Body (Cocoa-Peanut Smoothie Blast).

One of my friends posted this healthy peanut butter smoothie recipe on her amazing blog. Happy Tummy Healthy Body is filled with gluten free and dairy free recipes that taste great and good for you. I blended this together right before bed and put it in the fridge to drink in the morning when I woke up. This recipe is so simple and quick to make I might just make it part of my routine. I had some chocolate protein powder in the cupboard that has just been waiting to be used so I switched that with the cocoa powder in the recipe. This was a great way to start my day instead of my usual bagel, not exactly filled with nutrients :s.

St. Lawrence Market – A better way to shop

20 Apr

St. Lawrence Market

Friday afternoon is always my time to clean and do groceries to get ready for the weekend. Yesterday I decided to make the trip to St. Lawrence Market in Toronto for some fresh fish and ingredients for ceviche. My dad is a huge fisherman so we always make ceviche with freshly caught fish when we are in Florida. This was my first time making ceviche on my own and I think it turned out quite nice. It was super easy to make, you just have to make sure you leave enough time for it to sit and “cook” before eating. The St. Lawrence Market in Toronto is one of the best Markets in the world and a great place to get high quality meat, fish and vegetables. Every time I buy vegetables from there I’m surprised by how much cheaper it is.

Here’s what you need:

Red snapper fillet (deboned)

3 Lemons

2 Limes

Red onion

1 tomato

Cilantro

1-2 Jalapeno

Avocado

Ceviche

Here’s how to make it:

First juice the lemon and lime into a large bowl, the acid from the lemon and lime are what cook the fish. Slice the fish into small 1 inch bite size pieces and put them into the bowl. Chop your onion, tomato, jalapeno and cilantro and add them to the bowl too. Put your ceviche in the fridge for 4-6 hours and right before eating slice up about half an avocado and add it on the side. This is such an easy fresh tasting recipe for an appetizer or a whole meal. Enjoy!

Benefits of Manuka Honey

Benefits of Manuka Honey

manuka.honey

It has been said that honey contains antibacterial benefits but Manuka Honey specifically has even more antibacterial benefits than your average jar of honey. The Manuka pollen is collected by honey-bees from the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium). The bush only flowers between 2-6 weeks of the year and comes from the same plant family as the Tea Tree in Australia.

This honey is full of antioxidants and natural properties to keep itself fresh naturally without any preservatives or refrigeration. The natural antibiotics in Manuka Honey are perfect for adding to your tea, steel cut oats or smoothie. Take daily to prevent sickness and help your body fight against disease!

When you are buying your Manuka Honey pay attention to the “Active” number, this one I have in the photograph has an active level of 12, anything over 10 is going to be beneficial! This honey tends to be a lot more expensive but a little goes a long way so you will find the jar lasting you a long time.

A fresh smoothie is a great way to get the day started instead of eating something heavy or greasy. This is a super simple smoothie that you can make on the weekend when you wake up, after a workout or even in a rush right before you leave for your work day. All you need to do is:

Blend together in a blender or food processer:

1 cup frozen or fresh mixed berries

1 cup coconut water

a few scoops of greek yogurt

1 banana

Optional: Add 1 tablespoon of manuka honey for extra sweetening

Pour into your cup of choice and enjoy!
